Achieving proportional delay differentiation efficiently

In this paper, we focus on efficiently achieving Proportional Delay Differentiation (PDD), an instance of the Proportional Differentiation Model first proposed under the DiffServ framework [IEEE Network (1999)]. PDD can be achieved using a few algorithms, one of the most well-known being Waiting Time Priority(WTP). Using WTP [Proc. ACM SIGCOMM (1999)] as a reference, we show that our proposed S...

Achieving Proportional Representation via Voting

Proportional representation (PR) is often discussed in voting settings as a major desideratum. For the past century or so, it is common both in practice and in the academic literature to jump to STV (Single Transferable Vote) as the solution for achieving PR. Some of the most prominent electoral reform movements around the globe are pushing for the adoption of STV. It has been termed a major op...

On the complexity of achieving proportional representation

We demonstrate that winner selection in two prominent proportional representation voting systems is a computationally intractable problem—implying that these systems are impractical when the assembly is large. On a different note, in settings where the size of the assembly is constant, we show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time.

Stochastic and Dependence Comparisons Between Extreme Order Statistics in the Case of Proportional Reversed Hazard Model

‎Independent random‎ ‎variables $Y_{1},ldots‎ ,‎Y_{n}$ belongs to the‎ ‎proportional reversed hazard rate (PRHR) model with‎ ‎proportionality parameters $lambda_1,...,lambda_n$‎, ‎if‎ ‎$Y_{k}sim G^{lambda _{k}}(x)$‎, ‎for $k=1,...,n$‎, ‎where $G$ is an‎ ‎absolutely continuous distribution function‎. ‎In this paper we compare‎ ‎the smallest order‎ ‎statistics‎, ‎the sample ranges and th...

Achieving Fully Proportional Representation by Clustering Voters

Both the Chamberlin–Courant and Monroe rules are voting rules solving the problem of so-called fully proportional representation: they select committees whose members represent the voters so that voters’ satisfaction with their assigned representatives is maximized. These rules suffer from a common disadvantage, being that it is computationally intractable to compute the winning committee exact...
